‘Petit Châteaux’ is the French plural form of the term ‘Petit Chateau‘, which in English literally translates to “small castle.” In the Bordeaux wine area, it has a particularly particular connotation. These tens of thousands of properties are modest in terms of size but not in terms of quality and cost.

No matter how few hectares a “classed growth” (or “cru classé” in French) may cover, it is absolutely not a “Petit Château.”

Although they can be found across the rest of the region, the appellations Bordeaux, Bourg, and Blaye have the highest concentration of “Petits Châteaux.”

Some Bordeaux best value for money wines are to be found at the most conscientious ‘Petits Châteaux’.
