The term “Terroir” is French and is quintessential to their approach to wine and winemaking. It has no equivalent in English and is considered controversial by some experts. It was central in the birth of the French AOCs (see What is the meaning of AOC in wine?).
It is a word that designates a unique combination of soil, topography, climate (macro and meso), microclimate, and other land properties (slopes, relief, natural wind protection, water retention, natural irrigation, reflection of the sun’s rays…) proper to a delimited area.
This term, when it comes to wine, takes on a special sense in the expression “goût du terroir”. “Goût du terroir” is used to highlight the peculiar, and almost undescribable, taste that all wines coming from the same area seem to exhibit.
