Cannubi, one of the recognized Cru of Barolo

Certain vineyard locations have historically enjoyed greater reputation and produced more distinct wines according to Barolo region locals and Piedmont wine professionals. The higher costs paid by négociants for grapes and wines from these specific vineyards reinforce this idea of higher quality.

While there is no absolute unanimity, most short lists of the finest Crus include:

  • Cannubi
  • both Rocche and Cerequio in La Morra
  • Sarmazza and Brunate in Barolo
  • Rocche, Villero and Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto
  • Lazzarito and Vigna Ronda in Serralunga d’Alba
  • Bussia, Ginestra and Santo Stefano di Perno in Monforte d’Alba

It is to be noted that according to local wisdom, the best sites for Barolo are said to be “the places where the snow melts first”.
