Flowers in the vineyards may be deliberately planted at row ends or even between rows as ‘cover crops’. ‘Cover crops’ can offer many advantages to a vineyard, for example, it can reduce the excess of water in a given soil (improving grape quality by reducing their excess of water), reduce vine vigor, prevent soil erosion or it can be sowed in order to increase the organic matter (green manure) in the soil (improving soil structure and soil water holding capacity).
Rose bushes grown at row ends are widespread in France, especially in the Medoc (Bordeaux region) and, increasingly, elsewhere, either for aesthetic reasons or because they may act as early indicators of a powdery mildew attack.
