“Oenotria” was the name given to southern Italy when Greek colonists first arrived there around 8 century BC. This name is derived from the ancient Greek οἶνος (oinos) literally meaning “wine”, ‘oenotria’ probably meaning ‘land of wine’. They called the local inhabitants, the ‘Oenotrians’. However, a theory states that local indigenous people already called themselves ‘Oenotrians’ before the Greeks came. What is for sure is that Southern Italy was already cultivating vines at that time and it was a substantial part of their economy at that time.
