‘ABC’ is an acronym for the quite common need in the wine industry to escape from the two most famous (and too standard) grape varieties: Cabernet and Chardonnay.
Depending on the context, it can either mean ‘Anything But Chardonnay’ or ‘Anything But Cabernet’.
Both expressions are used by either producers or consumers to help encourage interest in grapes other than widespread international grape varieties.
In the 1980s and 1990s, wines from the Rhone Valley in France greatly benefited from this dynamic because of its autoctonous grapes (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre) and distinctive wines. The famous ‘Rhone Rangers’ were concomitant to this ‘ABC’ movement (click here to learn more about the ‘Rhone Rangers’).
