In the late 1980s, Atypical Ageing (ATA) or Untypical Ageing (UTA) was first reported in Germany under the term Untypisher Alterungsnote. It’s utilized to recognize a phenomenon that’s primarily present in white wines from cool climates.

Affected wines become more bitter, lose their varietal character very early, and take on unusual flavors and scents reminiscent of wet towels, old furniture varnish, and naphthalene.

Thus far, studies have indicated a connection between this and the vine’s low assimilable nitrogen content. Vine stress is most likely the reason, especially in dry years and dry vineyards. This could be the reason why Australia has not yet seen the occurrence, despite it being observed in areas like northern Germany, the Pacific Northwest, and the eastern US.
