Due to the high level of intra-varietal variability, Nebbiolo has produced several biotypes over time.
4 are traditionnally considered as the most significant ones and are the most widespread:
- Bolla: a lesser-quality, high-yielding biotypes. Its plantings are decreasing
- Michet: a virused form of the Lampia biotype
- Lampia: generally considered as the main biotype. It is a clone of high quality that is widely planted throughout the Piemonte region. It is viewed as a reliable clone
- Rosé: recent DNA analysis has demonstrated that the Nebbiolo Rosé is a distinct grape variety. However, it is related and very similar to the standard Nebbiolo. The level of planting of the Nebbiolo Rosé is clearly decreasing in Piemonte because this variety offers higher alcohol but lesser color and a weaker acidity.
