The Indicaçao de Proveniencia Regulamentada, sometimes shortened as IPR, is a second-tier designated wine region in Portugal. In theory, once the region has its own regulatory body, it is a candidate for promotion to DOC status.
Most former IPR were promoted to DOC status in the mid-2000s and a number of smaller neighboring IPRs have merged into one DOC.
Portugal IPRs can be compared to the former VDQS category in France (click here to learn more about VDQS).
