The logo of the grands crus classés du Médoc et de Sauternes

a)     Presentation

The Sustainable Excellence Charter for Grands Crus Classés en 1855 du Médoc and Sauternes is neither a certification nor a label in itself. But, as it is carried implicitly through the brand of the ‘Grands Crus Classés’. However, it has an influence on all the wineries located in the Grands Crus of Bordeaux.

This ethical charter is not binding on these members. However, it includes a section on ethical and environmental commitment on the part of its members. It is a voluntary commitment that can be likened to a profession of faith.

b)     Main guidelines

This charter does not replace the individual initiatives of members. It is presented in the form of a synthetic document called ‘Ethical Charter GCC 1855’.

c)     An example of a certified winery in Bordeaux

The Chateau Haut-Brion in Bordeaux is a good example of the successful environmental engagement within this ‘Charte’ through its dual certification: High Environmental Value (HEV) since 2018 and ISO 14001 since 2019.
