The stalk that holds the leaf blade and lamina in place on a plant’s leaf is known as a petiole. Petioles, which branch from the main stem of the shoot and have comparable physical characteristics, are made of stem tissue. Swellings at the ends of the petiole cause the leaf blade to move in response to environmental factors including low light and water stress. A vine’s nutritional condition is evaluated using samples of its petioles collected at flowering.

Petioles have different properties according on the type of vine and the growing environment, and they are longer on robust vines. Petioles can range from 5 to 20 cm (2 to 8 inches) in length, from green to red, and from smooth to hairy depending on the variety. These characteristics aid in the differentiation of varieties.
